Mhz and Ghz

(This is probably a stupid question, but what the hell)

Can I add Mhz to my CPU without actually replacing it?
Like I add my Ram.
 
Yea like Fuzz already said. You can actually add MHZ by overclocking your CPU but you cannot add it the same one would plunk in more ram. When It comes time to add more MHZ (as you put it) your best bet is to upgrade CPU.

Edit: Suppose I should mention (that and I love to edit my posts :P)

MHZ/GHZ is the measurement used to describe speed... In this case CPU speed. You purchase one single CPU (depending on system) and it comes at a certain speed. Overclocking would make your CPU run faster therefore adding extra MHZ as you put it.

What exactly is overclocking?
I have 2.66Ghz Intel Pentium 4 and I'd like it to go up to about 3.0-3.2Ghz, can I simply add Mhz, if so how? Is there an empty slot were I insert a chip just like the Ram thing?
 
Read this its tells you how to overclock. As Blue stated earlier, its not a chipo you add to the motherboard like you would with a stick of RAM.

No, This is what i'm trying to say... you dont add anything. You make the one you have now run faster through overclocking or you replace it (recommended).
 
I know what the abbreviation mhz stands for, but what does a mhz mean in terms of the cpu, like isnt it some rate of calculations the cpu does per set amount of time?

ya, i think its how many cycles it can do in a second, or something like that.
 
well.. a CPU is a sh*t load of logic ports as you may know. wich means, the out of a logic port is either "1" or its "0".

the ammount of Hz means the ammount of times the output of those logic ports is updated.
so, a 3GHz would be 3 * 10^9 updates per second.
so 3000000000 times/second. ( and now you try to do that with a light swich by yourself :P )

it may not be 100% accurate what ive told. but in rough lines, thats the easyest explanation
 
mhz is a clock frequency. A Hz or hertz is defined as one cycle per second. If you were to do one operation per second then you would be running at 1 Hz. A megahertz or 1 Mhz is 1x10^6 Hz, so it's 1000000 operations per second. A gigahertz is 1x10^9 cycles per second or 1000 mHz.

It's a basic clock speed and is proportional to how fast the processor can crunch numbers. There is a lot more to it then that, but that's the gist of it.

You will also see a speed rating like this on ram (actually the RAMBUS) and the Front side bus. This is an indicator as to how fast data can be processed through them. Think of data like water. It has to go from a storage tank (ram) through a processor to become useable. Then more water is passed through the processor back into the storage tank. The faster you can move the water and the more water you can move, the better your performance.

That's about as basic as I can explain it without leaving out MAJOR parts. I would check out www.howstuffworks.com in their computer section. It does a great job of explaining computer stuff.

Well just because you have the space make and model of hardware doesn't mean you can OC the same amount. There's differences in make/model all the way down to BIOS revisions, motherboard and CPU revisions -- even when all those match identically -- just because your friend can OC to a certain degree does not mean you can too.

what does mhz mean? Isnt that how many calculations the cpu does per clock cycle?
Its the number of cycles per second the clock generator operates at
