Mic Input?

First off Im new to this board and am here because i am very desperate to find a solution. I am trying to record into my mic input on my laptop (stock soundcard) but i cannot figure out what the hell to do. For the most part I know computers, so im not a complete idiot when it comes to stuff like this, but i cannot record, i have tried messing with the levels, tested the hardware, reinstalled the driver but i cannot figure it out, im fed up. Please help, oh and im to cheap to buy a new sound card

I am trying to record into my mic input on my laptop (stock soundcard) but I cannot figure out what the hell to do
1. Make sure your sound unit is functional (i.e., you've got drivers).
2. Get a sound recording proggie (something even like Windows Sound Recorder)
3. Plug a functional mic into the mic jack
4. Hit record.
If you've got problems check that
- You dont have the mic on mute (under recording, not playback)
- You dont have your primary recording device is something other than the sound unit you've got plugged in
- Youve enabled the 20db boost
