MicroATX vs. ATX

sorry for all the basic questions, but this might be the one I need answered to order my board, and the question is: if you can find a MicroATX board with all you want on it, is there any other reason to go with an ATX board? durability??

From my experiece most matx MB will not overclock as well as a full size board. Also, cooling can become a larger issue the smaller layout.
If you post up some boards you are interested in, maybe we could help give you some more direction.

Years ago mATX motherboards did not have the features of regular ATX motherboards. Very few people had mATX builds. Now days...they have all the same stuff and are just as capable as a full ATX motherboards. The overclocking part I have heard people complain about mATX motherboards not being on par with normal ATX motherboards.

Well thats alittle far fetched. Over stretching it there alittle bit. I would not suggest a mATX board unless you just have a small case.

Also something that is not mention too, is that most likely with a matx is that there aren't very many PCI slots or express slots, which in the future could be a hinderance! Cause as everyone know tech is growing fast, so hence comes the PCI slots and express, u can use cards in the future to make your computer more up to date. Also another thing is it makes you more versatile! If sometime in the future you may need to add things to ur computer that ur board may not have, such as a wireless network card, most popular graphics card, it just goes on and on, what you could add! So I agree with stranglehold alot here. The two boards are not the same at all, yes you can use the same ram, same processors, but you limit yourself when you need to expand! Cause typically those boards only come with one slot, either a PCIe (which is I think what they tpically come with) or a PCI slot. So this does limit you emmensly from future add ons.

I think we are straying too far away from his actual question...

Answer is no, if all you need and will ever need is on the mATX then no... i guess assuming you are not going to overclock... i cant speak for myself on overclocking on a mATX board so i cant say lion149 is right or wrong.

This is about the best little 880g mATX boards around.

If you want alittle faster onboard video in a mATX. Other then the onboard being alittle better, your giving up alittle bit of quality.

The better of the 890GX, but you will pay for it.

Yeah, it's a little better. The only diff between the 4250 and 4290 is the stock speed. They perform pretty much identically. You can clock the 4290 to 1000-1050 easy as anything, but you still have a 4290. You can do the same with each. The 4290 won't substitue for a dedicated card any more than a 4250. So the 4290 isn't, on it's own, worth the extra $.

^ The 890GX boards do typically have better MOSFET designs, which makes for better overclocking. Just a thought.

these day's size lol, but most still go with full size ATX, I myself prefer them, they look alot better in windowed cases, and can take more expansion space, you cant get a dual slot video card, Sound CArd and Wifi card on an mATX
