Microsoft deserves more credit

I have recently been hearing alot about OpenOffice and how people claim that Microsoft is just some big evil company and there are free "better" alternatives for everything out there. Basically, people claiming that Microsoft is worthless. I find this completely crazy. Some people need to give Microsoft more credit. OpenOffice wouldn't be what it is if Microsoft hadn't worked so hard to create Office. Even though OpenOffice supposedly wrote all its own code and just copied the "look and feel" of Office, it is still owes its success to the very program that it is trying to replace. I don't have any numbers, but I would bet that Microsoft invested a lot of money into creating a good "look and feel" for their program, along with hiring people whose job it is to create new features, such as auto-correct. If Microsoft hadn't spent so much inventing new features, other programs like OpenOffice wouldn't be able to copy them.

Long story short, I am not saying that OpenOffice and other freeware software is bad, it is great when you don't feel like spending a few hundred dollars to type a letter to your mom, but people need to accept that fact that many freeware and open source programs wouldn't be as good as they are without the huge corporations that have given them a layout to copy and adapt.

Its much easier to copy and improve something than to pull it out of thin air.

They made the look and feel similar so people would be comfortable using it. Why do you think so many GUI's look similar to windows? Basically all computers are windows based, and probably anyone who's used a computer knows how to work Windows. Same goes for office... If you've used some sort of Office application, it's probably a Microsoft one.

Why deviate from the "standard"? People are looking for an alternative to MS Office, but not something totally different. If they had a completely new interface, people wouldn't like it. Hehe, check out what most people say about Office 2007 and it's new interface ;)

i was about to say the same thing on office2007, totally crap. why the NEW interface anyways ? look at vista inself people is angry about the UAC thing. its really bothersome. yes i will give credit to MS but very limited credit:P .
My sister once used open office she didn't even know.she didn't even know she was using opensuse10.1 but she noticed it while saving her docs. it wasn't .doc

I noticed when I used OpenOffice, the suck was incredible :P I didn't like it at all, it's not an entirely bad program but there were just too many things that didn't quite work right. They might have fixed them by now but I'll stick to MS Office.

As to the new interface, people will get used to it and eventually like it, assuming it stays anyway.

It's people like you who microsoft could never please, if they made office 2007 with the same old interface you would all be moaning that they never change it, what the hell are they supposed to do?

dragoln

Face the fact, even if you do not like Microsoft most people will be forced to use and/or deal with its products professionally or personally if they have any interest in computers.

So it is a necessary evil, if evil at all.

haha, good one. as if you knew me in the least.
be careful you might get blasted with your very own bullet:D

i love microsoft. they make me happy. i run a computer deal through them and im happy with them. :) they can help you out alot on anything if you call them. They give you the best support ever.

Microsoft's great.

It's not their fault they're so successful. What do you want them to do? Make their products worse, or harder to use to give the rest of the market a chance? It's not going to happen, people.

Most of the anti-microsoft campaign is led by mac enthusiasts. Yes, apple was first to the gate with a mouse-driven GUI computer interface. Windows 1.0 and 2.0 were flops, even. Apple had YEARS to gain a considerable marketshare while microsoft fumbled around, grasping for new ground. But they didn't. Windows 3.1 came out, and revolutionized the way 90%+ of the computer world functions. Microsoft didn't MAKE Apple fail, hell, they gave them one hell of a fair head start.

It even continues today, with people complaining about how similar vista is to osx, even though vista looked almost EXACTLY the way it does today, ever since it went into development, YEARS before osx came out. Much of the arguments against microsoft are laughably flawed, and i would agree completely, Microsoft deserves a lot more credit than most people are WILLING to give them.

OpenOffice definitely is not as good as MS Office, but with the $200+ price difference, I can deal with it. It's just not as user friendly, but it still has all the features.

The ribbon is really convenient if you give it a chance. And it frees up screen space. Microsoft is a really good company if you give them a chance, (well better than apple, Jesus Christ can they make a lousy OS). I think people wish they were bill gates too much.

Haha i'm not partial in any since in this topic but I find this one comical... Have you seen vista? Vista is a blatent copy of OSX Tiger. This is part of the reason longhorn was totally revised after 2 years of development becuase jobbs and his company threatned to sue them for copyright infringement. Like i said i'm not taking sides on this one but in a way i think microsoft is a little overpriced in all their software. I would like to see wehre they cansay that office is worth 200+ and that Vista is worth 300+ for the best version? There are no price breakdowns on the web and frankly if i hadnt got vista for free i wouldnt have bought it thats for sure.

IM ALL WITH MICROSOFT AND THEM NEEDING MORE CREDIT. They really put a lot of time into their programs and even if there are some problems they are esily fixable

Why not over-price it? They have a pretty captive audience because people will want to buy software that they think will work because it's made by the same firm.

HAHAHAHA FUNNY MICROSOFT SOFTWARE THAT WORKS ALL THE TIME!!! lol without them and constantly having to fix their problems my job woudldnt exist their software never works right all the time like its supposed to....

Maybe that says something about the system administrator.

We run 2003 on our server here, and it's up 24/7 with no problems.

people think that office is overpriced just because everyone has always used office and it has just become a staple. People do not realize how much those programs can use. Have you ever looked the power of excel in all of the prewritten programs, and the ease of writing your own programs? Look at how much a single computer game costs, pay $40 or so for WOW with $15 per month, and look at all the productive stuff you can do with office, Seems pretty cheap if you actually plan on using more than Word for writing a letter, and Excel for balancing your checkbook. Most people don't need Office, because they will never use more than basic word processing, but they still want it because of the name.
