i am upgrading my pc to windows 7 from xp, but i'm not sure whether any files i create using ms word, publisher etc will be compatible with ms office on xp. my schools computers operate on xp, and as i used to run vista i know there can be problems getting a file created on one to work with another. but is it the same for windows 7. do i just have to save it as a certain file type on one for it to work with the other?

I think I'm understanding you.
The file is created by the software, not the OS so an upgrade from XP to Windows 7 will make no difference at all.

If you have different versions of Office like 97-2003 or 2007 or even the latest at school and at home then save them in the appropriate format.

Later versions are backward compatible and will open all earlier files and will "save as" in the earlier format so they can be opened by the older office versions.

which version of 7 do i need so i can run word and publisher? i dont want to spend too much.

Any version of Windows 7 will run Word or Publisher but Windows 7 does not come with a licenced copy of Microsoft Office. You will have to install software to open / create / edit and save these files, try "Open Office" for free.
