Microsoft Office Word question

On the new computer, I used the Microsoft Office Word 2003 that I already had paid for. But now I cannot open documents that are sent to me. I know that there is a way to facilitate opening these documents (because this happened in the past) - it was something about compatibility mode (just not certain right now how this is done). So - does anyone know how to do this? Thanks in advance.

I tried the link, and went through a download process. Then I went back to try to open the document that had been sent to me. But it still presents a box that says Microsoft Office: the Microsoft product necessary to open this file is not installed on your computer, and then it recommends Microsoft Home & Office. It offers three selections:
already have 2010 (activate), online to purchase Office (purchase), or try office free for a limited time (try), and a link "already purchased a different version of office". With uncertainty about what is necessary, I click on that link - it takes me to Amazon.ca online shopping with "thank you for purchasing Office! Download to your new PC now". It offers three options: Home & Student 2013, Home & Business 2013, or Professional 2013. I try to click on these - nothing happens. There's a bar near the bottom of my screen - I click on it to allow blocked material - it responds with something about active content and "error occurred in script of this page" and "object doesn't support property or method "On FrameLoad" (browser restricted this file from showing active content that could access your computer. Click for options - and it repeats the "error" stuff. I do not know what next to do. So - can anyone offer some ideas? Thanks again.

Do you have the trial version of office 2010 installed? You should be able to activate the starter version of it. It's free but it comes with ads or you can download open office which supports docx files. Or you can try libreoffice as well.
