Microsoft to expand on free-developing...

Microsoft makes it's move against Sony's PS3 launch.
Free development tools and licensing to create games for XBox 360 and Windows PC.

I believe this will greatly impact the world of Sony, especially with the hardware production investment they have done so far, free licensing/tools seem like an additional investment Sony might not be able to undertake. They have already borrowed over $600 million for PS3 production/development alone.

Imagine thousands of developers and millions of smaller developing companies creating games for a single console. The only major issue I can see here for Microsoft, aside from quantity over quality, is the fact that although larger developers will appreciate the waived licensing costs, the competition that might emerge from this could be colossal, which might cost them a lot more than a licensing fee in the end.

What do you think?

I pretty much think that MS will win this one, and i want them to! people may not like them, but, Windows, contrary to popular belief, actually does work.

Don't you think that they might lose some support from the developing industry, given that they will have added competition producing a large quantity of low quality products and the every now and then surprising innovative and/or blockbuster title from small houses or even individual people.

All developers share a piece of a pie, and this pie will now be split into smaller pieces; therefore, smaller profits.
Do you think large developers will decide to move towards a console that will provide a "stable" developing community and even possibly create stronger alliances through this?

why would the lose developer support... they will continue to develpe there games... it just gives the consumer more options

Of course! That is my point exactly: The consumer has more option and even has the option to create his/her own option!

Which means, if a certain percentage of consumers had $60.00 to purchase a game where a large studio invested a large amount of money to develop, but instead purchased 3 games at $20.00 each from smaller developers or individuals through online game downloading which is now easily possible, these large developing companies would have less profit and might have to readjust to the changing development by cutting down costs, be it in quality or content.

In all honesty, developers are not all about developing games for people, they're about making money with the games they develop. For sure most developers love the art that they create for us to enjoy, but in the end, the profit they make is what allows them to continue this sequence through growth or stability. I believe that geopardizing this stability could possibly cause minor negative reactions that could disrupt the development of software for the console. Hence, moving and/or creating alliances with other consoles where their products will have better chances of being purchased. And also, they might decide to do so simply to boycott a free-giving company that is deciding to split and share the profit-pie.

The only problem with having one large console company for developers is the monopoly that this would create. And Microsoft has already gotten targeted for this once in the past...

Oh, and Windows works, if you spend twelve to eighteen hours *****-slapping it into submission... :) (BTW, I'm not a total fanboy of Macs, but after my recent five-day ordeal to get my computer running, I'm little ornery in regards to Windows right now...)

Cause obviously having the mac's ability to magically erase all your files is fun...

Never experienced that, but I do dislike how you have to go and close the active program after you close all the windows of the program. Seems a little redundant to me...

Oh, and if you're curious, I do invoke the third quote of my sig quite frequently ;)

Microsoft needs to forget about their Xbox 360 hardware and start making some quality games. It only takes one really unique one. Hey, it's why I bought their Xbox, just for Tecmo's DOA XBV.
