Microsoft XP illegal sign flashing

I bought a used computer with windows xp pro installed. When I went to download the updates it stated I have either an illegal copy or I may be the victim of bogus software. The window comes up whenever I open WinXP, but I am able to use the program as I can click on 'resolve later.' I was told there is a website I can access which will allow me to get the downloads. I am not looking for any problems with 'illegal software,' just a fix if possible.

yea someone had either put an xp that was downloaded from p2p file sharing programs, or used the same xP on different pcs

the only fix to this is to buy a new windows xp

or if your sure its genuine, phone microsoft
 
If you bought your PC from a dealer, then you have every right to go stomping back in there and complain about this and seek compensation or redress! If you bought it from a private party, you can tell Microsoft about it, because you bought it in good faith, believing it was a legit installation.

yea, selling computers with illeagle copies of XP means whoop-ass time for whoever bought...
 
can i just say make sure that windows XP is included when you buy the PC, as if it says the os isn't included then they put the 30 day trial version on
 
ring microsoft and report the person you bought it from they might give you a free key because you are the inocent party

i think i might know what happened, when the first owner had the pc it was origional,

but he reformatted and put an illegal os and you bought it from theere,
Person probabbly thought it was quicker then delete his files and programs,


did he give you a XP Cd

Dude have fun with this one, the only way you are going to get anywhere is to buy a new copy of it. A few years ago I had a similar issue with my Toshiba laptop that I bought from CompUsa. I had it for a little over a year and I was having issues with it, so I formatted everything and when I went to reinstall all the drives and what I got the same message, so I contacted CompUsa and went round and round with them, but got nowhere with the monkeys. So I called Microsoft and was told that they would contact CompUsa and see if it was returned and if it was not there was nothing they could do for me.

Well they called CompUsa and needless to say it was not returned by anyone else, which I tried telling Microsoft. So the customer service rep called me back and told me the bad news that I MUST HAVE put an illegal copy in there, which pissed me off because I DIDNT DO A DAMN THING!!

After I got off the phone with the Monkey that I could barely understand, because every damn US job is out sourced. I called back and demanded to talk to a supervisor, after being put on hold for what seemed like and 10 hours (half hour) I finally talked to the supervisor who told me to send the CD's that had the drivers and all the software on them that came with the PC and they would check them to see what the deal was.

WEEEEEEELLLLLLL 2 weeks later I get call from Microsoft telling me that the CD's I had received with my PC had illegal software on them and Spyware. How this happened I HAVE NO CLUE, but I was PISSED!!!! He then told me that they were shipping out a new windows disk for me and they were opening an investigation on CompUSA and Toshiba. So after jumping through hoops, being accused of fraud it was finally straightened out.

In your case I highly doubt Microsoft will do much unless it was purchased from a retailer, because there is no proof that YOU didnt install it. I mean I had the reciept and I still had to twist arms to prove to them that this was not my fault. Good Luck

but micrsoft are gay, i say in multiple threads there traitors, to their own slogan,

but what can you say a multiebillion doller company, doesn't really have to be nice to a small problem like that,

have you got the OS (the one they sent out)

But that would mean bill would have to wait an extra 2 seconds to buy another ferrari.:P
But I must agree with what hes been said, you won't be able to prove that you didn't put it on since you bought it from an individual as a used comp. The only thing you can do is go talk to the person who you bought it from.
 
Microsoft isn't mornallly that strict overthings like this overthe phone as people think they are... just call there activation line..

I know I was just kidding around. That is a good idea, call them and see what they want you to do. Most likely you will still have to talk to the person you bought the comp from though.
 
This sounds to me like, it was not installed on another machine. It sounds to me like they got a copy of Windows Xp Corporate via P2P or Torrents (because you're not having activation problems), and installed it thinking it would go over okay. Even if they did have a corporate license, you get it licesned to you, and you only. It's only licensed for your situation. Such as, if your corporation gets a VLK plan, you can't use that on a home PC.

The reason this message comes up is because Microsoft delivers this stuff in other ways to corporate customers. Sometimes VLK license keys will be blocked as well. Remember, VLK is licensed, so they have no right to sell it, and even if they did, they'd have to sell the whole several thousand dollar plan to each customer every time. OEM manufactuers can get cut deals on copies of Windows for individual PCs. They are one CD for each, and you should be provided with a test passing, holigramed CD.

If I were you I would seriously be going back to that company, demanding a refund, and even threatening to tip off Microsoft. Hell, I'd just tip off Microsoft, they really go after people for selling illegal Windows.
 
Everyteh SC7 said is exactly right. Btw where did you get this computer from, because if it was from a business getting rid of their old computers, then it probably is the scenario stated above. Microsoft does not take pirated software lightly and will do what they can to resolve it. Think about it every piece of pirated software sold means the lose at least $100, and thats only an oem home edition, up throught thousands of dollars if its a server version, etc.

Yes, and even if it was a corporation, they are violating the EULA for their VLK. If they want to transfer their VLK, they must transfer it all at once, meaning someone will need to get all of the machines with that copy of windows. Or they must wipe Windows off all of the machines. They cannot sell individual machines with that license. And, you mentioned OEM home, that's the base. VLK only applies to Professional, even more. :eek:

Oh, no that is what I mean, if they are selling them off then they are violating it on every single computer like you said, they can't sell the computers with company software on it. And I was just using the xp home oem price just to show how much money that is even on the low low end.

When a pirate is made microsoft just lose a sale of Windows XP, its like 30% of world population dont buy XP, they have pirated, thats 30% of the population, who wont give him the money for the os, and how much is XP pro £120

so he might be loosing out big time (217709390.83333333333)

it all adds up, but a single os wouldn't make a difference, what i can suggest is to remove the update KB905474 and youll be back to standard xp if not system restore until before service packs were installed

What makes this one special. I don't like paying microsofts prices, but I do, just oem :D . But the thing is its not like he voluntarily bought pirated software, he was sold it, so it really should be resolved, between you, the person you bought it from and microsoft.
