Minimum system RAM

Do some graphics cards need a minimum of system RAM?

Something about 512 MB of video RAM needing 1 GB of system RAM?
So, if you want 256 MB of video RAM, you need 512 MB of system RAM?

Well yes there is, for certain cards that have turbocache. And generally speaking, your system RAM should be at least twice your video RAM, but that isn't necessary. Although it would be rather weird to have more video RAM than system RAM.

No, not really any minimum. However, I view it that based on your graphics memory, the minimum your system should have is twice your vram, and the optimal minimum you should probably have is 4x the ram. So if you have a 128MB card, you should have a minimum of 256MB of ram, and ideally you would have at least 512MB of ram. A 256 card, you would have a minimum of 512 and optimally at least a gig. 512, well if you have a card that has 512MB of memory you're likely getting into some pretty nice rigs (except for those punk X1600's with 512, what a waste). Obviously this isn't a rule, and not reality, but its just sort of a rule of thumb I have.

i have a 256MB GPU and 2GB system RAM and it works great

normally if you need a vid card with anythign more that 512MB RAM youll need mroe system RAM becuase that games that utiliaze 512MB of GPU RAM are intensive

I had a 16MB PCI card in a 486 with 8MB RAM :P

But yeah, it should work just fine with any amout of RAM. But if you have very little RAM, don't exect games to play well
