Mixing brands

I know you should have the same brand Ram together, but how much trouble is there truly if you mix brands?

Right now I have 512MB ram in my PC 2 x 256MB and I want to take out one of the 256 sticks and put a 512 in there, but there is no brand on the sticks that are there now..........all I know is they PC3200.

In one of my computers I have a 256MB PC2700 Samsung and an off brand 512MB PC3200... I've run into 0 (zero) problems.

Nothing serious but you'd better off with 2x512mb or 2x1gb rather than 3 sticks of mix

Well I would be mixing 2 sticks one a 256 and the other a 512, I would have a spare stick of 256.

But doesnt that make your PC3200 run at a slower speed because the PC2700 is teh slower of the 2 so the Mobo will clock the PC3200 down.....correct?

My bad then about the 3 sticks, but still you'd see better result off 2 new sticks, about your other question, the answer is yes it'll downclock itself to 2700

Correct. Remember that if all your slots are filled it will downclock too.

Mixing will not harm or do anything...

I know a guy who's got 256MB in one slot, 512MB in the other. No idea of the brand names, but both are PC3200. Zero problems.

i usually mix them but i dont see the differences !!
I recently mixed a 256 DDR1 PC3200 with a with a 128 ddr1 pc2700 , pc still working

Yup.
Even on my box, as it shows in my sig, I've got Samsung in one slot, Hyundai in the other. They're both PC2700, and 512MB, but the brands are different. As long as they're the same type of RAM, the brand doesn't make a bit o' difference.
