Mobo change out possible?

As you can tell, i have a Compaq Presario and I want to change the motherboard out of it. The problem is, i heard (I could be mistaken) that you have to load the OS on the motherboard, and all i have is the recovery disk they provide for you. Is it possible to change out the motherboard without having to buy the OS?
 
No, the OS does not get loaded onto the motherboard. You should be fine doing that.

But why is your processor at 1.8GHz? It should either be at 2.2GHz or 2.4GHz, depending on which socket you have.
 
As long as you have the CD key on the side of the case you should be okay to use the OS install disk for the compaq, Just make sure the new Motherboard(Mobo) fits the RAM, CPU , PSU(power supply unit), and any add on cards.
 
To tell you the truth, I just recently noticed that as I was looking up the info but, ya, it's at 1.81Ghz.

Odd question: Is there such a mobo the has 1xAGP slot, 2xPCI-E SLi slots, and at least 1xPCI slots and that is mATX compatible?

AGP and PCI-E arn't found on the same mother board.

Ummm.... they are; bet you can find one on newegg. Anyway, just checked and it is at 2.41Ghz. I was originally looking at the number by the RAM on the first tab of the system info menu. What is that number anyway if it's not the processor speed?
 
wow, your right they do have AGP and PCI-E on the same board. news to me. So if you know that some boards have AGP and PCI-E and you know about newegg why dont you go see if they have one that meets your standards I sure they do. Matx do you mean Microatx?

They have AGP and PCI-E on the same board, but no PCI-E SLI with AGP

matx is Micro ATX.

What is that number anyway if it's not the processor speed?

It probably was the processor speed. When it doesn't need all 2400MHz, it runs at a slower speed to conserve electricity and produce less heat.

If it doesn't, there is a problem. But why would you want to keep it high? It only wastes electricity and creates more heat for the system. And you evidently don't need the extra speed.
 
Sorry to revive this threads but I've been reading other threads that contradict what is said in this one. (Ex. Microsoft limits loading XP to one motherboard.) Just to double check, can I just change my mobo or do I have to reload XP on it?
