Hi all. I have a question about processors and motherboard sockets.

I have a MSI motherboard (model: MS-6533-E) that has a 478 Socket. Currently I have a Celeron 2.4Ghz in it. Will this mobo work with ANY 478 Socket Pentium IV (Willimate or Northwood) processor, as the manual says:

  • Socket 478 for P4 processors (Willimate 478 & Northwood 478) with 400/533Mhz (100/133Mhz QDIR)
  • Socket 478 for P4 processors (Willimate 478 & Northwood 478) with 400/533Mhz (100/133Mhz QDIR)
Core frequency from 1.7Ghz to 2.53Ghz and up

Or only those up to 2.53Ghz.

For eg, would this work

Thanks, Doug.

That cpu most likely wont work because its a 90nm(prescott), your motherboard supports Willimate and Northwood cpu's.

Yeah I figured that out myself after posting, thanks though.

Another related question; if I change the CPU will I need to reinstall Windows, or should it just sort itself out when I boot it up?

Cheers, Doug.
