Mobo dead. Well...I think so.

Hey everyone, thanks for checking out my thread. Well, heres the situation, about a year ago, my roommate thought it would be fun to play with the BIOS (hes not too computer savvy :P) so, he went and put the comp onto I think it was 40% overclock settings then save and exit. According to him it instantly died. Now, the mobo (ASUS p5pl2) has this bios reset feature built in, in case of wrong overclock settings. This hasnt been working apparently. Nor does resetting the BIOS with the jumpers on the mobo. Now, I've been paid for the dead mobo so I can replace it...but then I got to thinking. I don't actually know if it's the mobo thats dead. When I turn the computer on, the monitor turns on, but it doesnt have the "signal missing" thing it does when the computer is off or the video card is unplugged, so I think the video card is fine. Obviously it powers up but it doesnt have a POST beep or anything and the screen simply stays black. The lack of a POST beep leads me to think that the mobo is dead. My old mobo was crappy anyway so I think i'll just replace it regardless and hope it works, but what do you guys think?

Have you tried taking the battery out for a few minutes? With it off and unplugged, push the power button a few times, then remove the battery for a minute, replace and plug it back up.

Cheers for the reply. Tried it a couple of times, with increasing amounts of time with the battery out of the socket, and yeah I pressed the power button to discharge power. Assuming there is nothing I can do to repair it, what do you think is broken? The motherboard?

UPDATE: So I replaced the mobo...same problem!! Do you guys reckon that the CPU is the problem? I'm probably going to just replace all the parts anyway, I'm due for an upgrade.

Does your friend realize how much a 40% OC is?! My god...
Anyway, the huge overclock may have caused your processor to commit suicide.

I used to have overclocked a Gigabyte mainboard and got the same no screen display error.

I take the CPU off and put it back, the PC works again.
Lucky to me.

Now your problem seems fried CPU.

Hope this helps!
Bill

He's a tool  he's never coming near my computer again! I myself don't even overclock at all, it scares me, anyway tomorrow I'm buying a new CPU so hopefully things come back into shape.
