mobo ?s

i was just wondering what sockets on a mobo are or what they plug in to. someone please explain what a socket is, what plugs into it and difference in numbers such as socket 730 socket 900whatever and so forth. i have never built a computer before, but it seems that if i wanted to this would be something to take into consideration. thanx

you plug your socket A (462-pin) cpu into a socket A mobo, it won't fit in any of other sockets. or if you have a 940-pin socket and a 939-pin cpu that could also fit.

so if you have a 754 socket cpu it won't fit into a 940 socket mobo

ok, so you have to get a cpu and mobo that are compatible (such as with the same number of pins). but are there any advantages to having more or less pins to a socket. i.e. is a 940 socket and mobo faster than a socket A cpu and mobo?

well.. yes.. but thats only because socket A is already 5 years old. and socket 940 is relatively new.

socket A (462 pin) Athlon XP 3200+ 2.2GHz Barton, the best socket A cpu

754 pin cpu Athlon 64 2800+ 1.8GHz 512KB L2 cache

as you can see the first cpu has less pins but is more powerful
