Mobo

Hi,

Just wondering if a laptop mobo chip goes bad. Can it be changed or fixed?

Also if possible maybe someone can post a link on how it looks like.

Thanks

laptop mobo is pretty much the whole computer in the laptop where most parts on it are fixed and cannot be replaced or changed, if can then replacement costs a lot of money, it is better to buy a new laptop!!! (my opinion)

If your motherboard goes bad, normally you can just swap it out with a new one.
Depending on the model and year will depend on how much the board costs.
And it sometimes can be a hassle to change if you haven't changed one out before.
But I agree on purchasing a new laptop if the expense is too much for a new mobo

I've reflowed a GPU on a laptop motherboard before to fix a problem (to reflow a chip though, the chip has to be attached to the mobo using a ball grid array (BGA), so you probably can't do it with the CPU, you could probably also reflow some memory chips), the capacitors could be replaced, some chips and sockets can be purchased online to replace the chips and sockets on a mobo.
However, when there is a problem with the mobo (maybe the laptop is not turning on properly or not turning on at all) and you don't know the exact part of the mobo that needs to be fixed, it's probably not worth it to try and fix the mobo, and it would probably just be better to buy a whole new mobo. The mobo can be quite expensive though, and sometimes it just better to buy a new, better, laptop altogether.

Thanks guys for the replies. What am really facing is that the laptop turns On but goes black. the light indicators are all On but nothing is showing. not even the HP logo at start or what so ever but just Black. I tried every possible way as in replacing the memory, removing hdd, plugin an external monitor etc. but no use. same result

Was thinking it could be the mobo is bad... What do you think?

I think that it is your GPU. Is it dedicated Graphics or integrated?
It could also be a bad primary RAM slot (assuming this as you have already said that you replaced the memory). The secondary (if equiped) will not work if the primary slot has a failure. I would suggest that you use a computer that you know works to borrow some ram from to test it. Your ram could be bad (even if you bought it new) causing a POST failure.

HP Pavillion dvxxxx series? Most likely the GPU. I've posted this somewhere else on this forums, so I'll just paste it here from there:

"I've had this exact same problem with an HP dvxxxx laptop. Most likely the GPU has overheated and the connection between the GPU and motherboard is no longer good. This can be fixed by performing a reflow or reball (which I did, and it fixed the problem for me). However, this is not a permanent fix (it may last from 1-6 months), the laptop apparently has a design flaw and it may overheat again in the future and cause more problems.

Doing a reflow can be quite a complicated procedure if you've never done it before, and you would have to take the motherboard out of the laptop completely.

It would be faster (and more expansive) to buy a new motherboard and replace the old one.

I'd recommend buying a new laptop, preferably not one that is on this list.

Also, if your laptop is on this list, you may recieve compensation, I haven't looked at that list myself, just got it from another forum member on another site."

Its a HP Pavilion tx2110us model.

So basically i need to throw it away and buy a new one. lol

Dont throw it away. 1 reason is that its a chemical hazard (mercury in the LCD).
If you get another, I would be willing to buy your busted one for parts ram, cpu, HDD, and such.

I agree with wolfeking, the entire laptop isn't useless, there are still some good parts, the LCD screen itself goes for around $120-150 on eBay.
