hey ppl
i'm pretty new to this networkin stuff so plzz help me out. I have a dsl connection and they gave me an ADSL modem. It is a Shiro 805E. I hooked it up with a Linksys WRT54G2 wireless router. It all works perfectly fine normally but nowadays there are a number of power outages in my area. I have connected a UPS to both of em but they restart every time the power goes out. Now whenever i try to connect then the wireless connectioni says Local only (i'm using vista). To make it work i have to restart my modem physically and this is getting really annoying because i have both of em downstairs in a special cabinet. Is there any way to avoid this having to restart issue or some way to restart the adsl modem through my wifi connection. I've tried accessing my modem through internet explorer by typing in its network address. it shows the login page to the modem but when i put the login pswd in... it says page failed to load... plz help me out someone...

First of all, are you sure your UPS is working and that you have the modem and router plugged in to the battery powered ports?

yes the UPS is working and the power ports are connected. Whenever the power goes out the modem and router restart. They are then on throughout. Wat i'm saying is that whenever the power supply switches over it stops the power for a brief moment. It's not an issue with the ups because i have other stuff connected to it as well and they work fine. I just need to know a way to restart my modem through my pc without goin down to the room physically or some alternative to avoid the need for it in the first place

Well, unless you had a software controllable power switch (you can get them), you will have to physically restart the modem.

As for the momentary power outage on the UPS...I would call that a problem with the UPS. The changeover should be brief enough not to affect the operation of your electronics at all. You may want to look into getting a better model. What do you have currently?

I second Zatharus. I have an APC UPC and when it switches over the lights in the room flickering and the beep the ups makes are the only clues I have the UPS has switched over to battery. You certainly have an issue with your UPS and you should replace it. It's normal for a modem-router-PC combo to lose a connection when the power flickers since each componet loses power for a brief second. I seen alot of this with people in rural areas when I did tech support for a wireless internet company.

dnt knw the make of the ups... but it only causes this brief power outage only with the modem... i have my tv and ps2 connected to it as well and they continue to work perfectly without any lapse

Well, it is possible that some equipment is more susceptible to the millisecond changeover loss of power. Odd that only router and modem would be effected. I'm wondering if you might be getting some sort of back-feed down your phone line during an outage that might be disrupting the modem.

Have you seen how the modem behaves during a battery power swap? If not, you could go pull the plug on the UPS. I am curious to know if the modem goes into a full reconnect mode or if it just looses the carrier signal.
