I wish to experiment with some system files in Linux Ubuntu. Is it possible, and if so, where can I find them? How do I go about editing those files?

Like what files? Can you try to modify them? Sure. Will it more then likely cause a kernel panic or package manager corruption? Yes. Almost guaranteed unless you know what you are doing. Judging by the fact that you are asking this question, I doubt you have the knowledge.
