Monitor as a TV or TV as a Monitor?

Hi, i'm new to these forums but I have a small question. In the future I am going to be building a new PC, but for the time being I have no TV to watch movies and game on. So I was wondering if it is better to buy an LCD Monitor and use it as a stand alone TV or to buy an LCD TV which I could use as a monitor in the future? Eventually I would like to use it for both purposes but for not it will only be used to watch DVDs and play video games.

Do you recommend any LCD Monitor and or TV for about a $500 Budget? What are some features I should be looking for?

welcome to the community mate
well this is a question you have to ask yourself because this depends on the money you want to spend later when you are planning to build your pc
Buy a good LCD Monitor and use it for stand alone tv for now and later to put it on your pc will be a good choice

If you want ease of use, get an LCD with a built-in tuner. It may be a bit more expensive in the end, but you know it will work regardless. Plus the tuners tend to be better and you'll know you'll have a digital tuner. If you want features, get a monitor and a capture card for your computer. With this setup, you can capture videos or watch TV while you use your computer (some TVs may have Picture-in-Picture options...) There will be more to configure, and you'll probably want a digital tuner on the capture card (many still have analog).

I was thinking about one of these two monitors:

What do you think? Is there something better in the same price range?

Then I would like to get these speakers and this DVD Player or something similar, my question is, will I be able to just plug the DVD player straight into the monitor and it will work? I don't need a PC or anything to use it as a TV right?

Both monitors look fine. The NEC might be a bit better, but probably hardly noticable.

Just realize you'll either have to go in your computer with the audio from the DVD player then back to the speakers, or the speakers must have some sort of aux input. Plus, I'm not sure what resolution you'll get using VGA on the computer...
