monitor not responding

yesterday, my block had a power outage in the middle of the night, but my computer wasn't on. i tried to turn it on about 15 min ago, but when i turned on the moniter it said "no input."

the led lights on the front of my computer light up, but they aren't the color they usually are (rather than a green it's more of an orange). also, the only noise i hear coming from the computer is the fan. i don't hear the hard drive or anything. the fan doesn't seem to be overworked because it's not very loud.

so is my computer dead? my specs are 256mb of ram, integrated graphics, windows xp home, 80gb hard drive. this isn't my primary machine, but it's the one my family uses and i'm the only relatively tech savy person in my house.

thanks in advance for the help.

it might be the motherboard, or the monitor, you can try switching the monitors of your other computer with the one that won't work. that way you can find out if it's the mnitor or Motherboard. and the lights on your monitor that is a yellow orange means that it's not getting a signal grom the computer normaly.

well, i would try to switch the monitors except my primary machine is a laptop. the led light isn't on the monitor, it's on my tower, around the power button. however, i'm assuming that this still means the same thing.

i thought it might be the motherboard causing the problem, but i wasn't sure. does anyone know of a way i can test this?

On a prebuilt store bought type of system the orange would point at hardware failure. You could have a bad supply or board unless the system saw a cpu failure. The light changing color is the manufacturer's code there. How old and what make is the system there?

can you borow a monitor from a friend? if not there might be a port on youe laptop to hook up a desktop monitor. do you have a grapghics card you could hook up to see if the intergrated graphics got burned? and I can't think of a way to test if the MOBO works or not short of taking it out and pluging it into a different computer

One other thing to throw at you is the age of the system. If that's been in use for a few years like 3 or 4 maybe longer the lithium battery may have finally grown too weak to preserve the cmos information. The green changing to orange shows power is there but something simple like a dead battery could prevent it from starting up. What make and model is the system there?

that computer is about 3 years old, it has a celeron processor. lol. it's an emachines model T2792. i checked the emachines website and this model isn't even on there anymore:confused:

Emperor Nero: i don't have a graphics card to test, but i might be able to borrow a monitor from one of my friends.

huh, i guess it was there. i didn't see it under models, but i just briefly looked. anyway, that's the computer i have. my mom is taking it in to the tech guy at her work tomorrow to get it checked out.

Yea, I think it would be a hardware failure, because if the monitor can display “no input” it should be working fine. Start from swapping your PSU with a working one and work your way thru etc.

also it might be a power surge
even if you dont have your computer on, the power is still going into your powersupply and could have fried something
