I want to buy a monitor in the 27-30 inch range I will be using this for work (at a distance of about 3 feet) and to watch movies (from about ten feet)

So far I haven't done much research but I do want a high res display with HDMI output. I've been looking at this LG monitor. The monitor will be mounted to my wall.

suggestions?

I think that monitor would be a great choice. I just wanted to add that if you wanted to tv tuner route from your desktop you could do this:

With

OR

If you do not want to go that route, what you have picked out will work just great.

EDIT: the built in speakers will not be the greatest on the monitors. Probably best to use external speakers.

You will get the best picture with HDMI or DVI. The only difference is that HDMI will carry sound through the HDMI cable and DVI will not. They will give the same picture.

The sound that the HDMI cable will carry comes from the monitor's speakers? I already have my speaker system setup. I'm my case there doesn't seem to be an advantafge to go the HDMI route.

Good clear article I will probably get the Asus display I just want to see it in action

How do I know if my movies will play at full res? like when you watch non-HD content on an HD tv you get all the black zones. I want my movies to take the whole screen.

Well the black bars are sometimes built into the format of the video. In that case there is nothing that you can do. 1920x1080 (or any other 16x9 ratio) will give you the best chance of not having the black bars. Most if not all widescreen movies are formatted in 16x9.

I hope that made some sort of sense.

You'll want to make sure you get a monitor that is HDCP compliant. I would check that that LG one is. I know that the 30" Apple monitors aren't. One of the reasons I went with the Dell.

Is there a brand preference? Is one company better then an other. I was talking about the Asus monitor to some friends and was instantly shot down. They were telling me to get an LG display but this is the only one that is 27 inches. Dell monitors are out of the question they are super expensive.

Do you have a source stating that the new 27 inch display is not HDCP? I could only find info from 2008.

I've decided I will go with the Asus VK278Q as it comes with an integrated webcam I'm not sure however if it comes with a mic. it is also HDCP ready. Also please answer my previous post.

Well just to clear things for me, did you want the tv tuner in the monitor? I only see the LG one as having one. I googled the ASUS monitor and I couldn't find anything that stated that it had one.

The specs look similar to me. ASUS has the a better response time (2ms vs 5ms) but you will not be able to tell the difference between the two. The contrast ratio as far as I can tell is measured by different standards so I can't really compare the two. I'm sure both are fine.

I know that you said that you have a speaker system but if you are running the TV strait though the monitor you will have to use the built in speakers being that you bypassed your computer completely.

I can't find enough of a difference in the specs to really call it either way just based on performance. based on features, I would go with the LG. I just like the added ports that it has and it's usefulness as a tv. it comes with a remote to use it just like one so that is a bonus from my standpoint.

What do you mean running the TV straight through? I don't know much about tv tuner aside that it records TV.

Apparently LG has a better warranty aswell. If the monitor breaks the send you a replacement monitor while you wait or something like that.

The LG monitor has a HDTV tuner in it already. This will not allow you to use it as a DVR but you will not need an add on tuner card in your computer to watch tv since the monitor already has it.

Hope that makes a bit more sense.

EDIT: I guess a better way to say it is that the LG monitor could be used as a standalone TV.

Great but I know there is a way to recorded TV to your PC. Do you not need a TV Tuner to do that?

Edit the LG monitor is also discontinued would that mean it isn't supported anymore?

If you want to record Tv to your PC then yes you need a tv tuner in your desktop.

Discontinued could just mean that they are not making that model anymore. I would guess that the warranty would still be good.
