Monitor question

i am using computer for gaming and if i buy a monitor/TV and it sais maximum resolution 1280 x 720 or so
wouldn't i be able to change resolution to what i want with my 8800GTS GPU?
and what would be the result?

and also whats the difference between the quality of DVI or HDMI?
 
If the max res is 1280x720, then that's as high as you can go.

DVI and HDMI are basically the same, except HDMI carries audio on the cable. DVI is just video.
