Monitor vs. HDTV

I'm a brand new member, so I apologize if there is an existing thread that covers this topic; I couldn't find any.

I recently purchased the M14x laptop from Alienware, and I'm having a hard time deciding between purchasing a 23" computer monitor, or spending a little more for a full size HDTV to double as an external.

What are the pros and cons of each? The uses would primarily be for movies and videos (After Effects editing or other). If both are HDMI compatible, would the main difference just be the speed and color ratios?

Thanks for the help!

I currently using 23" HDTV (1920x1080, 5ms) for my PC, to be honest, I don't see the real difference in normal use. But if you are using it for editing, I have no idea if the color accuracy matter.

TV is more expensive than monitor.

I used to use my Sharp Aquos 32 inch for my monitor for the longest time. It was all right, but the resolutions were messed up. I could only set my resolution as 1024x768, even though it is a 1080p, otherwise it was skewed. Be weary of stuff like that. I love my new Acer 21.5 1080p monitor.

I have 3 46" LCD's and will never go back to a small monitor. Once you have a large LCD connected to your computer you wont want anything else.

I prefer my 22" monitor to my 42" TV, I have been there, gone back and I don't want to go back again unless I am watching a film

Probably is unless you get the insanely expensive ~32" LCD monitors with insane resolution, all you get is a massive monitor with 1080p resolution. This doesn't really help for productivity as you don't get any screen real estate.

Unless you need high DPI.

I like my 5760 x 1080 res.

What was the issue you had with it?

Over what? Most 22"- 24" monitors are 1080p so I don't see your point.

edit: Also to qoute the OP, "The uses would primarily be for movies and videos (After Effects editing or other)" so the TV would be best suited for OPS needs.

Exactly, you get the same screen real estate with your 42" that one gets with a 22", unless your eyes are that bad. I don't need text to be that big. The only thing that's good for in my opinion is gaming and movies.

I had a 32" TV as a monitor once, it sucked. The pixels were plainly visible.
