Monitor will work with one computer but not another

I have two computers that I use at different times. I want to use an older monitor with the amd computer with XP. When I hook it up it will start to boot but after the the xp screen appears, it goes blank and stays that way.
If I try that monitor on the other computer it works fine. If I try the other monitor on the amd computer it also works fine. I would like to keep the older monitor with the amd because it is a smaller monitor.

Any ideas?

Most likely the screen resolution is set too high for the monitor. Boot to safe mode and change the resolution.
 
Still won't work

I tried resetting the resolution but it still won't work. (it was already set on the lowest setting)
It boots up fine in safe mode and monitor seems to work ok in that mode.

any other ideas?

Boot to safe mode, uninstall the video driver software, boot to regular mode and install the latest driver for the video.
