Monitor won't work on different computer

Hi,

I have a monitor that has a dvi connection slot and a vga slot, it works when it's connected with the dvi connection in another cpmputer but when I connect it to a different computer with a vga connecter it won't switch on.

Why is this? Any ideas?

check drivers and how new is the moniter

The monitor is new, the light doesn't even swtich on when the computer is started but when I put the monitor on a different computer it works.

Can drivers for a monitor stop a monitor from swtiching on?

Look in "Device Manager", is there a yellow question mark showing against the monitor or perhaps your "Hibernate or sleep mode" settings are causing it and it won't wake. Is the BIOS set for "plug and play". Just some suggestions.

Thanks for your suggestions. When I plug the monitor that is usually plugged into the computer there is no yellow mark next to the monitor icon in device manager and says default monitor.

When the other monitor (the one that won't switch on) is plugged in it's not possible to check if there is a yellow mark in device manager because it's not swticthed on.

If a monitor has a vga and dvi connector should it work for both? Why would changing a monitor from dvi to vga affect the power?

My bad, obviously you can't check it if it won't display :)

I'm a bit confused on whether you are using the same VGA cable, when it works in the other computer. Could it be the cable or maybe the VGA socket in the monitor is faulty.

I haven't tested it in the other computer that it works in with a vga cable but it works with the dvi connector, maybe I should test it with a vga connector.

The other computer I'm trying to get the monitor to work on doesn't have a dvi connector so I used a vga cable to connect them but it didn't work, I will try using a different vga cable but I don't see why that would stop it switching on. Unless the dvi cable is supplying power? Could the monitor be setup by the manufactures to just accept dvi cables?

Try turning down the hertz and resolution on the other computer with VGA and slowly build them up, if it shows a display... And no, DVI doesn't provide any type of power to the monitor. Now there are different kinds of DVI cables; single link, dual link, DVI-A, etc... But as long as your using a straight VGA cable without any type of converters(IE DVI to VGA) you should be fine)

1) If testing it with another vga cable doesn't work, or if it doesn't work on the computer it works on when using a vga cable I'm guessing that means the connector on the monitor is broken?

2) If both the dvi cable is plugged in the back of the monitor at the same time as the vga cable being plugged in to the other computer could it cause the monitor not to swtich on?

3) If it's the video card would the monitor have an orange light when switched on? Could the video card stop the monitor from being switched on even if it's plugged in?
