Mooching Wireless

things like netstumbler are supposed to be used to discaover FREE PUBLIC gateways etc... any use to crack or gain access to private LAN's or WLAN's would be illegal and shouldnt be discussed here

I read something in popular science about setting up a wireless open network to get to know your neighbors or something, like when you connected it would bring you to a specific homepage or something, dunno how that would work, but that's the idea I guess

Yes, since its a private network in a crowded place, it is illegal to connect. It would be like tapping into someones ethernet wires if you saw them just sitting around. Such matters should not be discussed here.
 
Does anyone know what the penalty or actual law is against this? because if so we cant say yes its illegal or no it isn't illegal.
