More cores, no bottleneck?

Hello all,
I currently have a computer where my CPU is bottlenecking my GPU (CPU @ 100% when GPU is only @ 70%). I am looking into a processor upgrade, but to get a better processor (for my socket) I pretty much have to get a quad core (I have a dual core now).

My question is, even though the single thread preformance of my current CPU and the one I'm looking at buying are pretty similar, will having 2 extra cores get rid of that bottleneck?

Thanks!

Would need to know what your current processor is. You may have an outdated socket, we don't know. Once you give us your current specs we can help you.

Socket 775 (Outdated I know, I know, but I'm not going to buy/ build a new system anytime soon so I have to make this work).

Current processor is a Intel Core2 Duo E6850 and Im looking at upgrading to a Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650.

Video card is a GTX 750Ti OC

Ok. Would need to know what motherboard you have to make sure the board supports the 9650.

That still doesn't answer my original question. Will I see a performance improvement, especially with that GPU bottleneck problem?

It depends on the game really, although at this point in time you'll generally see an all-around improvement.

Which one are you testing with, or are you just using synthetics?

No, it will definitely be faster, 2 cores at 3GHz is slower than 4 cores at 3GHz almost without exception.

For tasks that had only implemented 1-2 threads your performance will be very similar for that task.

But yes, I agree from more of a 'hardware availability/capacity' perspective.

So... Gaming?? I'm assuming if the CPU load is at 100% and bottlenecking, adding two cores would bring the load down to (theoretically) 50% simply based on cores, no?

If the games are coded to use more than 2 cores then yes you will see a performance increase in the games. In the case that the games will only use 2 cores at a maximum then you might see a small improvement in those games since other Windows tasks can be handled by the other cores available.

What games do you want to improve the performance in? Almost all of the current generation games that I can think of will use more than 2 cores so I would say yes, you will see a performance increase from adding 2 more cores to your system.
