Hello, i was wondering..Say that you have a 40GB HardDrive..does having more files on it make your computer slower? And im not talking about to the point where u have like 10 mb free space, im saying like, out of 40GB you have over 10GB Free, would that make it slower. Or.. would having more programs or video files on your computer make it slower? i know that your computer will get a little slower when the files are open, but would just having the files there, not using them, make it slower? I wouldnt think that it would but i just want to make sure. Thanks alot.

As you fill it up, the drive become smore fragmented. I think there's a point where even if you run defragment, it's still rather fragmented. My dad's comp, for example. A program said it was 85% fragmented, then 40% after running a defrag program. So yes, you will loose some speed as you load the drive up.

The defragmenter will defrag the drive all the way ( almost ) if the drive still has enough room to move the files...cause I have tons of DVDS on mine and it won't harldy defrag

Right

it wont defrag the file is in use and running in the background. you cant defrag system files.
Try useing Disk Cleanup first.
Right on Kof,shut down ALL running applications too.

i recalled someone say this command will defrag your boot up files so it will start up the computer faster.

run defrag from your boot drive like "defrag c: -b "

Also note that fragmentation is only an issue when you access those sectors :) (i.e., archive drives arent really affected)
