Will I be able to run HL2 on medium-high settings with a Geforce 5500 FX 256 MB graphics card, Athlon 3300+ operating at 2.4 GHz, 512 MB of DDR, and a 160 GB HD. By medium-high, I mean slightly above average textures, shadowing, ect. running on 1024-768?

Your Processor, Ram, and Hard Drive are all fine to run HL2 on Max Settings, Im not sure about your graphics card, I know that on the Nvidia GeForce 6800GT you can run HL2 @ max settings @1280x1024 with no slowdown and @1600x1200 at very playable speeds so I would guess with the GeForce 5500FX 256 card you should be able to play it since it's a fairly newish card. Newer than the Geforce 4 TI 4600 and I have a friend that runs HL2 on that.

However, According to gamespot's benchmarks you can run Doom 3 @ 640x480 on medium settings and only get 16.5fps which is unplayable, if I was you I'd get a different graphics card.

Holy crap where'd you find a 3300+ .... those things are rare. As for the Running medium high, the FX5500 suffers from two fallacies:
1. its a GeForceFX card trying to play DirectX9 ... if you play in DirectX8 mode you'll be better off
2. The FX5500 is essentially an upclocked 5200 and the 5200 is far from a gaming card

budget

And im kinda on a tight budget, the NVIDIA 6800 is not really an option unless anyone can find it really cheap. I was looking into the ATI Radion 9800, is that one any good?

we got the 3300+ on the HP site. we customised a computer, and it was an option, so we got it
Just for your info, while it is an incredible novelty to have a A64-3300 ... the performance is significantly less than what you'd think:

A64-3300
Core: Newcastle/256K
Clock: 2.40Ghz
L2: 256K
Dual Channel Support: No
HTL Speed = 800MHz

A64-3200
Core: Newcastle
Clock: 2.20Ghz
L2: 512K
Dual Channel Support: No
HTL Speed = 800MHz

A64-3200
Core: Clawhammer
Clock: 2.00Ghz
L2: 1MB
Dual Channel Support: No
HTL Speed = 800MHz

Both revisions of the 3200 are arguably superior chips (more so the proper Newcastle)

1. What is the budget? :)
2. Do you mean the 9800 or the 9800Pro? THe pro is miles superior
3. If you are considering the 9800, have a look at the 6600 ... and if you're considering the 9800Pro, consider the 6600GT

price

Probably 100-150 ($), and whichever one is better, 9800, or 9800 pro. But I'm guessing there both good cards, so it will probably come down to which has more bang for the buck
