More Linux [Ubuntu problems]

Well like usual, Ubuntu is not working for me. I'm trying to install it but aparently Ubuntu 7.10 doesn't like my 8800GT. I have the text based version, and tried safe graphics mode. (Funny...XP, Vista, and Home Server 2003 installed fine...).

Does anyone have any ideas what I should do? I've looked around on the Ubuntu forums, but most people have problems after they install (and are just told to get drivers) but I can't even install it. When I put in the Live CD there's a few optiions...one of them being something about a "Install driver update CD"....could I burn a CD with proper video card drivers to allow this to work? If so, could someone show me? Thanks.

*Update* I got it installed (using my integrated gfx). See my post on 2nd Page.

well you could try a different distro or if you want to be able to just use the live cd and dont want to go install it, you need to remaster the cd
 
No, install it using the alternative installer, then once you have it installed, follow the step by step how to.

It kinda sucks having the latest and greatest video card because they are not supported out of the box with linux (since the card came out after the distrubution).

Or just install the driver and use it now... Don't give your advice on linux, your previous posts shows that you arent quite a "linux expert", nor proficient.

Well that does work, i mean trying to tell someone how to load a driver onto linux when they have no idea how to use it is almost not worth going through each command. i mean really, you can try like fedora 8 or something which is the easiest

Eh, it's all about the same. There are some tools that make it a little easier, but sooner or later you are going to need to learn how to use the terminal, so why not sooner?

How did you go about trying to install drivers? Did you use the Restricted Drivers application?

Download the alternative install cd. It basicly installs in text mode. Then once it is installed, it will start in text mode since your drivers arent installed.

The Alt-CD has options to install a command line system, yes, but also has an option to install the entire OS, only it will do so in a text-based environment.

Unless, you have experience with a command-line style of input, I'd stay away from using such to install x-servers, desktops, etc.

I got it installed (using my integrated gfx). Now is it possible for me to install drivers for the 8800GT, turn off computer, put 8800GT back in, and then turn it back on? I've downloaded nvidia drivers for the 8800 series cards, and finally figured out how to install them but it says I need to close my x-server first.

Is there an easier way? (probably not, seeing as how this is Ubutnu but I figured I'd ask anyway)
 
^ I've followed a similar tutorial, but it didn't work because I didn't know how to update my build essentials, and the tutorial you linked me to showed me how...hopefully I can get this to work...(fingers crossed)
