More RAM vs. Faster Processor?

i'm thinking about buying a new laptop. It's about 50 bucks to make it 512mb of ram and 100 bucks to upgrade a (AMD sempron 3000+ at 1.8 ghz 1600mhz fsb) to a (amd athlon 64 3200+ 2 ghz 2000mhz FSB). which is going to be my best bet?

I've put ram in my desktop before but never a laptop, so i'm not sure of how easy that is to do on my own. which am i better off getting, or will it make that much of a diffrerance if i get both?

preciate some feedback

ther is no possible way that those are 1600mhz and 2000mhz fsb, you must be reading it wrong, most likely there 160 and 200mhz, but anyway. I assume that upgrading to 512mb for $50 is upgrading from 256mb, if i were you, i would go with the ram, since you cant run much with only 256mb ram, and i dont think you would notice much different between a 1.8ghz and a 2.0ghz.

When i psted the first reply, i didnt see that you asked another question. It is very easy to upgrade the ram, even easier than a desktop. Usually there is a removable panel on the bottom of your laptop, you simply buy more ram, and then put it in there (make sure you get the right kind though).

i understand that 2.0 and 1.8 ghz arent that differant, but the fact that its an athlon64 vs. a sempron, is there much of a differance?

Well, depending on what you plan to do with this computer it may not be worth it.

i plan on web browsing, messaging, maybe some occasional movie editing, some movie watching, not too high performance of games (vice city, driver 3). I guess just some baic stuff?

nothing come stock 160MHz FSB. WHat he means is that his hypertransport runs at 800/1000

Yeah make it at least 512MB. The K8 advantage is that it has an ondie memory controller so that its latencies are much lower so it really enjoys memory stuff :)

In this case, not really. The sempron is just a 32bit version of the nearest Athlon64

i would go for the ram memory, because i currently run a 1333mHz (as you can see), and with my 1024 mb (pc133), i can play such games as halflife 2 and doom 3 prett well ;)

Wellllll

As to the processor, as Praetor said, the Sempron series are basically 32bit versions of Athlon 64s (when talking socket 754, they are Thoroughbred Bs for socket A). However, they have a lower cache (256KB). The Athlon 64s have 512KB and 1MB respectively.I would personally go with more ram as that is where you will notice the greatest increase in performance. Note that I am at 2.6Ghz with my A64 and only have 512MB of ram. I can do whatever I want except play games such as Doom 3 and others in the way I would like due to a lack of RAM. 1GB should be the norm.

JAN :D

with a lower fsb
1. K8 platforms dont have FSBs and while Semprons do come in a K7 variant, if im not mistaken, they've been disconned.
2. Even if we replace FSB with HT, Semprons dont have a lower HT.
