More RAM?

Hello,
I'm currently using a HP Pavilion a220n desktop with 512mb RAM and about 12 gb left on my Hard Drive. I do a lot of video editing on this computer, mainly using many Adobe programs. When I open up my editing program and start getting to work the program experiences a lot of lag, it gets to the point where I cannot even finish my work because it is so severe. When I open up my task manager the program takes up anywhere from 100,000k up to 200,000k of memory usage. Now my question is, would adding more RAM help solve this problem?Or would I need something else to solve this?

It really depends what is slowing your computer down. More than likely, it is your lack of RAM and windows overusing the swap file. Is your hard drive fairly active during these lags?
 
I would say more ram cause the standard for xp is 1gig now and since your doing video editing I would go for 1 1/2 or 2 gigs if your mobo supports that.

I run 2gb of ram here for video capturing and editing with large capacity drives like one 500gb model now seeing only 54gb left. Fortunately that's the fourth drive with no OS on it. But this is one problem for you there with only some 12gb left on a smaller drive loaded with many or simply large files where the volume can easily become fragmented as well as a need for more memory as suggested earlier.

so he could only have 1gig of ram and for all that he would be better building (or buying) a new computer with a big hard drive (or 2) and a good bit of ram.
 
Adding a second 512mb and cleaning up the drive would help somewhat there. But for speeding things up and seeing a large performance gain along with reducing the bottlenecks with video software seen there the benefit of going new would be the idea. Going from an old XP2600 if the cpu there is the same as seen at the HP site into a much newer dual core model with the capability of 2gb or more ram would see a large jump.

Anytime you go for a new system or upgrade an older one the newer you can go the better off you're going to be in staying updated. Getting into a new system with a good 2gb of memory, a much faster cpu, and one or more larger drives would be the eventual plan you would have to make anyways. This of course will depend primarily on your budget. Eventually all of us will be moving out of XP at some point whether it's Vista, newer, or a different OS like Linux.
