mortal kombat banned!?!?!?!

I have never played the game, so dont know what is meant to be so bad about it.
If it as bad as they say, why cant they just put a R rating on it and restrict it to adults purchasing the game? Why ban it completely?

Australia does not have an Adults (R18) classification for video games. Although the classification guidelines are the same for film, computer games can only receive a max of MA15+.
If a game does not meet the MA15+ guidelines, and is considered inappropriate for 15 years olds, the game is refused classification, and legally cannot be bought or sold in Australia, thus, banned.
Games are often banned in Australia only to be re-released with more child-friendly versions, such as Left For Dead 2. In other circumstances the game can be resubmitted later down the track without any changes and the decision can be changed, such as I believe was the case with Aliens Vs Predators(?).

I haven't played mortal combat since I was about 10 years old on the nintendo 64. I remember it because my mother and I got into an argument on being able to play it as she thought it was too violent. I never really got into the whole arcade style fighting games though.

The makers of Mortal Combat have said that they will be considering all options, so I'm sure that in a few months time there will be a version of Mortal Combat that is approved by the classification board, and due to all the "Omgz it gotz banned" internet publicity, it will do rather well compared to previous Mortal Combat games. However, if they take too long to release it or they take too much content out, they run the risk of large numbers of people downloading it illegally from overseas.

Shall be interesting to see how things turn out in the next few months, and hopefully at the next SCAG meeting they'll finally update the classification system.

yes i do hope so, i don't see why we cant have a R18+ the dudes argument is i believe "video games are for kids" even though a servery found 87% of gamers in Australia are over 18 years of age,

According to Good Game (aired 15/03/2011) Mortal Kombat will be resubmitting the game unedited to the classification board claiming that the game is 'on par' with other games available on the market.

I'ts not banned, it's just refused classification (RC) instead of G (All ages), PG (Parental Guidance), M (Mature), MA (15+ Only). There's no R18+ rating for games, but there is for all other media.

Refused Classification means essentially that it's too violent/gory/whatever, because the highest rating is for 15 year olds, nothing for adults. So it creates a problem. Games suitable for adults, but not children, are commonly Refused Classification, or have low-gore versions for Australia (See Left 4 Dead 2)
It's backwards, boderline mentally handicapped... like most politics.
