Most important factor in gaming processor

What is the most important feature a processor should be measured by for gaming applications? Is it the amount of GHz? Or is it the L2 cache? And does the core matter that much?
 
more GHz on a given line (P4 or Athlon64) will always be better than a slower model from same line. Cache always has an impact on gaming performance but 2MB of cache on a p4 is limited in use and the 1MBL2 Athlon models don't get much boost either
