What motherboard chipsets are best to go with when choosing a motherboard? What are northbridge and southbridge and do I really need both?
 
A motherboard have a northbridge and a sothbridge.
The northbridge is an integrated circuit that is responsible for the communications between the CPU interface, AGP, PCI,PCI-E and the memory. The northbridge gets its name for commonly being North of the PCI bus.

The Southbridge, also known as the I/O Controller Hub (ICH), is a chip that implements the "slower" capabilities of the motherboard in a northbridge/southbridge chipset computer architecture. The southbridge can usually be distinguished from the northbridge by not being directly connected to the CPU. Rather, the northbridge ties the southbridge to the CPU.

The choose of the chipset of the motherboards depends of what processor you want firm AMD,INTEL-Pentium,or from Via , sockets(numbers of pins), numbers of processor (dual,quatro - on single socket or with many sockets - servers in general).

So you have to answer to other question before to know what is the best chipset for you.

AMD processor on AM2 socket.

Just wanna know if the ati radeon HD2900 will work great on the nvidia NF590 SLI chipset or the nvidia 8800GTS? I am also just wondering why would nvidia made a good chipset for ati graphic card to be used on them rather on their own graphic card?


So the bottom line is will the ati radeon HD2900 work great on the nvidia NF590 SLI chipset?
 
A Nvidia card on a ATI/AMD chip or a ATI/AMD card on a Nvidia chip will run just fine. If you want to run SLI you have to use Nvidia/Nvidia
 
Yea it would work as long as it has a PCIe 16 slot. You would be better off if your going AMD to use a Nforce 4, 570 or 590 chipset unless you just want onboard video
