Motherboard Compatibility?

I've recently bought myself a new CPU, as its just about the only thing i haven't changed on what was a low end Dell PC.

Anyway, my motherboard's a socket 478 so I bought the best processor i could find which is an Extreme Edition 3.4ghz 2mb Pentium 4 (SL7CH).

However I'm a bit of a muppet, as i've realised that my motherboard (ASRock pv4m800) only supports CPU's with up to 1mb cache.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what would happen if i stuck the cpu in the motherboard even though the cpu is a 2mb; would it just run at 1mb or will it do something damaging?

Motherboards shouldnt limit the size of L2 cache, since thats on the CPU itself.

How much did you pay for that processor anyways?

And nothing should be damaged, the worst that would happen is that it wouldnt boot.

It depends on the clock speed of the CPU and the mobo. Chances are it probably will not work... no post (Boot-up) when after you turn it on. If that is a case, remove the cpu. It will not damage it, the mobo will protect it - basically from any serious harm.

I got it for £73 ($145) of ebay! Its probably the best CPU available for a socket 478.

This is the CPU compatibility table for my Motherboard http://www.asrock.com/mb/cpu.asp?Model=P4VM800 ...Acording to that, its only compatible with 3.4 1mb cache CPU's...

I'll cross my fingers and stick it in when i get it and just see what happens!
 
i've also been looking at those SL7CH cpu's on ebay and found your thread after a bit of googling - looks like it fizzled out without resolve so i emailed asrock for confirmation whether its compatible with the p4vm800...

the answer came back promptly:

"Sorry! The CPU is P4 Extreme Edition. P4VM800 does not support P4 Extreme Edition CPU."

maybe its time to forget about paying a premium for a legacy chip and make the move to socket 775 and pcie goodness?
