Motherboard Cpu change??

Hi:) New here, and hoping I've posted this in the right place!
My son's pc is a gaming machine, which has been 'added to' by myself over the past couple of years to improve spec and performance. ( graphics card, Ram, Power supply)
My son is trying to play newer games and is running 'can I run this' to see if his pc can manage the strain! Everything is fine except the cpu speed, which is only 2.2.
My question is, can I change the CPU on his motherboard, which one do I buy, and how easy is it??!! :eek:Would I need to reinstall windows? ( kinda assuming yes)
I have found details of the motherboard here.. http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/4Core1600-D800/
... but don't understand from that what cpu to buy and if I can replace it easily. He currently has intel Pentium dual cpu E2200.
Would really appreciate any help with this, thanks in advance! :):P

It is an intel 775 socket system, so you can install any 775 socket processor although i do not think they can be bought brand new anymore, you should try ebay there will be loads on there.

A processor is relatively easy to replace

1. just remove the cpu cooler which should have 4 locking pins

2. release the metal latch

3. carefully remove the old cpu

4. very gently lower the new cpu into place ( there is a small arrow on both the metal latch and the cpu, these MUST be lined up in the same corner ) also be careful of the pins on the bottom of the cpu you can not afford to bend these

5. apply a pea size blob of thermal paste like arctic silver

6. refit the cpu cooler and connect the cable to the motherboard

7. start the system and check all is ok

A good idea is to go on to youtube and search " fitting 775 socket cpu " there will be lots videos so you can actually watch how it is done.

Hi and thank you! I have googled 'how to' and you are right there's loads of vids! Think I'm set, could you just confirm that I will need to do a complete new install of the OS?????? And will there be Bios issues? If so how do I deal with that?
Thanks all...just want to make sure after I do it that it'll all work!
cheers Yvonne xx

You should not find any bios issues as none of the bios updates for that board refer to additional cpu support.

You should not need to do a full new install, but it may throw the activation out, if you get a message saying windows needs to activated you should be able to do the phone line re-activation.

Hey, you can get really cheap 775 cpus on ebay. Have a look i just saw an intel pentium dual core @ 3.4ghz fully tested, which for £20 (no joke) is really good going and will make quite an improvement.
