My brother-in-law and I are going to be building a computer. What we're looking at is an amd 64 fx-55, an nvidia GeForce 5950 ultra or the ati 9800(will literallly end up being a coin toss), and the terratec dmx fire 2496. Need to know what would be the best motherboard to use.

Why not get the FX53 and a X800XL? (between the 9800 and 5950U ... the 5950 ... between the 9800Pro/XT and the 5950U, the 9800Pro/XT)

As for the best mobo, prolly the MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum

My brother-in-law said he wants the "best". I was looking around, while waiting for a reply, and found the nforce 4 mobo and the geforce 6800 ultra video card. Would these be better chioces? I have no clue what the hottest stuff out right now is. I haven't looked this stuff up in over two years, and that's pretty much an eternity when it comes to computers.

Then why consider the 5950/9800? Neither was anything special

Would these be better chioces
If you've got silly amounts of money to throw at this comp sure :) youll be happy with the performance but not neccesarily from a cost-effecitveness perspective

Like I said, I haven't looked this stuff up in a while....as far as silly amounts of money to throw at it, He wants to build a "monster" and money isn't an issue. So, do you think we should go with the nforce 4 mb or the one you mentioned earlier?

Well the nForce4 wont work with the 9800 because the nForce4 is a PCIe board. If you want the best of the best why not get nForce4SLI and 2 6800Ultras?
