Motherboard LAN?

I have been using motherboard LAN for as long as i've had a computer, and never really had any problems with it. When i upgrade my motherboard, i'm thinking about getting a quality LAN card. Is it really worth it?
In games like Warhammer or CoD4, lag is a killer, but will a LAN card really help that much, or is the built in LAN just as good.
 
won't make any difference. I know there are some high end pci-e lan cards. They usually get you a little faster response time. But throughput rates are the same. Not worth spending the money on.
 
No it won't help, the lag is most likely caused from either other computers on your network, if you have a slow/poor internet connection, or you are far away from the server. A different LAN card will only effect network traffic on YOUR computer, so if someone else is downloading something on another PC on the network, it won't make a bit of difference. The only time a card like the Killer NIC works is if you have significant network traffic (other then the game) that is trying to access the internet, such as automatic updates, the Killer NIC prioritizes packets so ones game-related are of highest priority, but then again once it hits the internet QoS is useless.
 
i doubt a seperate network card would be much improvement.

however if your into gaming i heard that those Killer Nic cards are quite good for lowering your ping.

They are only good at lowering the ping if your computer is utilizing other network/internet resources while gaming, such as I stated in my previous post of automatic updates, remote monitoring programs, streaming music, etc. What the Killer NIC does is change the QoS of the TCP/IP stack to allow game packets to be of highest priority. This however does not work if someone else is utilizing lots of bandwidth on your network, and it does not effect anything over the internet.
 
Ive heard of couble ethernet on one computer so if one port lags for an instance the other one will take over. Thats about all i heard about doing for helping on lag client side.

Unless you have two separate networks/modems connected to both ethernet ports, I don't see how that could make a difference. If you have both your ethernet ports hooked up to the same switch they should both be about the same, unless something was tied to the other NIC's IP address.
 
I never really researched it i just remember seeing something about having 2 ethernet ports running at the same time so if one has a hickup, client side, then the other one picks up, its sounds kinda dumb to be ive never really had any hang ups at all that i even notice and i have wireless 2 floors up. I wasn't at all sure that all worked at all
 
Usually you'd only have dual NICs on your PC if your PC is functioning as a server. You usually only have dual NICs on a server along with gigabit ether.
Hops is what matters for gaming, not your NIC

Most new motherboards (the higher end models) have dual NIC's. I never really figured out why though, lol.

So you can poll info from the server and send info to it also, or multi. users, thus more polling and sending. (i.e. stream, while uploading files)

I was referring to having two ports on a consumer motherboard, not on a server.

I was too. Hence why a consumer grade mobo has dual nic
I'm sure google can provide a plethora of info/diagrams
