Motherboard posts, and computer turns on, but doesn't beep

Hey everyone,

I just built a computer with my brother. Everything is plugged into the correct spots. All of the fans running, and all of the devices work.

When I turn the computer on, it posts and turns on. In fact, I am currently installing windows.

So, everything seems to be running properly, but when I turn the computer on it does not beep.

Can this be an indication of something wrong, or is this common?

Cheers!

Did you install the internal speaker?

It's a small black thing that you plug into the same panel as the power switch, reset switch, etc.

It's probably fine. I wouldn't worry about it.

Double check and make sure you've got it fully seated in the right spot.

My MSI board beeps everytime it posts when I had the speaker installed.

I double and triple checked, and it is on the right pins. It says "speaker" with a (-) and (+) showing where the negative and positive goes.

All I want to really know is if the computer posts, and runs (I installed Windows, it is all up and running, all the drivers are installed, I am on the internet ... the whole nine yards), and the little beep doesn't happen ... is not having a beep an indicator that there is something wrong, or should I just leave it alone?

Thanks!

It is possible to enable and disable the onboard speak via windows. You can check its enabled via this method:

  1. Open Device Manager
  2. In Device Manager click View and click "Show hidden devices"
  3. This should make "Non-Plug and Play Drivers" visible in Device Manager.
  4. Expand Non-Plug and Play Drivers by clicking the plus and double-click Beep.
  5. Within the "Beep properties" window click the Driver tab.
  6. Make sure its on automatic.

Windows doesn't control the POST beep though

Some motherboard BIOSES have an ability to disable beep sounds, but usually by default they are enabled.
Have you tried loading optimized defaults and saving them to CMOS?
Also did you put the CMOS battery on the motherboard and made sure the battery is good?
They usually last for 5 years or so...

As for the speaker pins on the motherboard, sometimes you need to put it opposite. Those + and - signs can be confusing sometimes.
For example the POWER switch does not care about the order of + and - pins.
But leds such as HDD led will not work at all even if put on the right pins if + and - is not connected correctly.
So if you are 100% sure that speaker is on the right pins, try to unplug it and plug it opposite.
You can also try another speaker just in case.
Most of the speaker's plastic connecting part requires 3 or 4 pins even though the actual speaker actually needs 2 pins only:

As for the connection here is how it approximately looks like:

So try connecting the speaker in the opposite direction.

Also some motherboards already have built in speaker.
