hello i have a computer, and i need to upgrade my motherboard. So i was wondering if anyone could tell me (in a list) what is required to buy a new motherboard.

E.G i walk into a computer store that sells many computer motherboards. Know which motherboard do i buy!!!

So i would like someone to tell me 'well if your going to get a new motherboard
1. it has to be compatible with the CPU etc
2. it has to fit in the slot of the last motherboard
3. ......
4. .....
And so on

Hope you can understand, d_gamma1 :o

what company is your current computer made by? typically motherboards cannot be replaced in company made computers, or else you would have to buy another copy of windows, along with new hardware

The above post is corresponding to the fact that you probably have a premade Dell, HP, Gatewat, etc, and you cannot really replace the motherboard. If you can replace the board, I would say the list would follow in this manner.

1. Form factor. If you have a ATX case(the most common), you need a motherboard with an ATX form factor

2. CPU socket type
Ensure your current or future CPU will fit in the socket and if you have a AMD/Intel CPU, then you must purchase the corresponding motherboard.

3. Memory compatibility and amount. DDR2 533/667/800/1066 etc. What type of memory can your mobo handle. If you want up to 8 gigs, you need to make sure there are enough RAM slots.

4. Card slots
If you want two or more graphics cards, you need the amount of PCIe slots that you want. If you need allot of PCI slots, make sure you get them and so on.

5. OS compatibility
Is the motherboard Vista ready?

Hey buddy what is the previous version of your mother board because you have to change the motherboard of the same company ....

to answer Lovelys question
my computer is custom built, not by a company but by a person so all the hardware is from a different companies. the motherboard i have currently is a AUSTeK M2N8-VMX Rev 1.xx (M2N8-VMX for short)

thx :)

You already have a AM2 motherboard. What are you wanting to upgrade to. It might be easier if you just install a bigger processor and add Ram if your wanting more speed.

to answer StrangleHold question

i want to upgrade my motherboard so i can get a much better processor (i have only 2.0 Ghz i need much more)

---Or---

what your saying is i can get a better processor that is compatible with the motherboard i have already???

yeah, I havent checked it out for myself but if your current mobo can suppory nice AM2 CPUs then just upgrade to a bangin chip and add some ram and do whatever you do on your computer.

Which piece of hardware does the Ghz apply, mobos or CPUs?? :o:o

Correct me if im wrong but its processors.
IF that is correct and i do buy a process on this site (CLICK HERE) how do i know if its compatible with the motherboard and all the other hardware i have already (ASUSTeK M2N8-VMX Rev 1.xx)

Does this help???????
i have AM2 socket
i have AGP slot
and i have DDR2

It should run it fine but cant seem to find it on Asus site to look for the latest Bios update. Plus that board has PCIe X16 slot that runs at X8 not a AGP slot.

DOes the motherboard have to be the same make as the processor:confused:
OTHERWISE why would you say you carnt find it on the asus site.

And do processors have slots??

Sorry for all the question, my just starting to lear about computer hardware

1. The Processor that you have is a AMD processor that fits the AM2 socket. Different manufactures make Socket AM2 boards like Asus/Gigabyte/DFI and so on.

2. The board you have is a Asus motherboard but for some reason I cant find it listed on there site.

3. Intel and AMD had a few older processors that ran in slots but both use a Socket designs now. Newer AMD processors use the AM2/AM2+ sockets and Intels use the LGA 775 Socket.

Thank for the info,
on this site NEWEGG that AMD processors only reach 3.1Ghz
But what if i want want to get about 4.0 Ghz, do i have to upgrade to a Pci-E Or get a new motherboard???

The highest GHZ processor that AMD makes right now is the AM2 X2 6400 at 3.2GHZ and neither Intel or AMD make a 4GHZ processor. And PCIe has nothing to do with the speed of the processor its the expansion slots on the motherboard for Video cards-sound card- Lan cards and so on.

Thank for the imfo,
