Motherboard replacement for sr1820nx?

Good afternoon all,

I am new to this forum and had a couple questions. I just recently been exposed to pc gaming world (co worker showed me just how pretty games are at 1080p) and made a decision to build a custom pc with the HP Presario sr1820nx. I am not looking for a high end pc, but not a crappy one either. I already started my quest to pc gaming but should have consulted here first.

Here's what I bought so far:

AMD Athlon II X2 270 Regor 3.4 GHz 2x1 MB (should get this today)
A GeForce GT 630 Graphics card (installed)
Windows 7 OS (installed)
Corsair 500W PSU (installed)
Memory initially came with a 2GB RAM but installed new DIMMS to total 4GB (a bit wary of this)

So after installing the Geforce, OS, and PSU, the pc responded much faster than before, and I installed my steam account to try out some games. I tried Half Life demo, since I used to play it on console. Changed the resolution to 1080 and lord I was in heaven. Half life was amazing to look at.

I played a few minutes and was pleased with the performance. However, I would like to play games like bf4 and I know the build I have might not work. So the questions I have are:

Can I replace the motherboard on the Presario? One that can sync well with the pieces I have already bought? If so, what are some motherboard types

Though the max memory I can have is 4GB, can I go over this without major issues? I guess this is overclocking the memory?

That motherboard won't support anything higher than 4gb of memory. In my opinion if you are wanting to play BF4, you will need a new motherboard, memory, cpu and most likely a better video card.

And get yourself a decent case, OEM cases don't have good cooling. And you may have issues connecting front panel connectors to motherboard.

I was thinking that.

Can you tell me what are some decent motherboards and cases available?

Just to remind you, you have a very old and dead platform in that system, socket 939. If you want a cheap system then look at am3+ motherboards and cpu's. Would start off by recommending this.

So I guess I'll have to shell out a little more money.

Update

So I ended up purchasing an asus M5A97 r2.0 motherboard, 8gb crucial memory, AMD FX Phenom II Processor, and a zalman z9 case. I have a couple of issues. One, I was building from a very old pc (from my first post) that had a lightscribe odd n a hdd with ide connections. The new mobo has only sata 6gb/s connections. Next is the case. I guess I got the older case as I have seen all over the net people using the z9 plus. I like the case, except for the rear fan. The fan has a 4 hole header, which is odd because all fans I've come across has the standard 2/3 hole header much like the heat sink fan. The 4 hole header is exactly the same kind of header for a odd/hdd connection to the psu. Meanwhile the front fan has the standard header?

If I get an ide/sata adapter for odd, will that cause any issues? I will most likely pick up a sata hdd since the older hdd is 3gb/S.

Secondly, what am I suppose to do with this rear fan? There is no connection for it on the mobo. I wasn't expecting to get an aftermarket fan just yet.

Other than that I'm just about done with my build. Any help/feedback is greatly appreciated.

Just plug the fan into a 4 pin molex connector from the power supply.

I would just get a SATA DVD and Harddrive.

I should have logged in and followed your advice on which cpu n mobo to get. I installed an m5a97 mobo with an AMD FX dual core chip to my zalman z9 case. It turned on except there was no beeping or post test and no bios. Went online and followed a video step by step of someone having the same issue to the point where he took out the battery, reset cmos, and one by one took out components to see which one was having issues. He had a ram issue while i had no luck regardless of what component i was takinfg out. No beep. I'm convinced the mobo just wasn't good. Saw negative reviews about it and I was being optimistic thinking in was lucky. Nope. Will return the mobo and cpu back today.
 
Sure you have the standoffs in the right places, if you get one wrong it will short out? Do you have the 4/8 pin CPU power connector plugged in?

Yes. I had the stand offs installed in the right places, made sure that I didn't tighten them or the screws on the motherboard. I tried HDMI at first no luck, then went to VGA, nothing. No beeps. Everything was functioning (DVD drive, fans, led light was on).

Aside from the GA-970A mobo, are there any other boards I should look at? I plan on returning the m5a97 today.
 
Update:

JohnB35, I got a GA-970 UD3 mobo (slightly different version) with an FX6350 cpu. Thanks for your suggestions, as I am now up and running. The jump from the old sr1820nx pc to this one is a huge difference!!
