is it possible to join motherboards together and make them work together for a more powerful computer? (my dad has a huge load of scrap ones that noone wants and are there for the taking)

A motherboard alone won't do anything. If you have full systems there are ways of doing distributing computing, but that's generally only usefull for computer modeling/simulations.
 
you can, but only on specific advacned server boards with the ight interfaces, not ordinary home/corporate use ones. so NO there isnt.
