Motherboard suggestions...

Hey all,

I've been out of the hardware scene for a while and I'm looking to change a few things on my system (specifically my CPU and mobo).

I don‘t really game (although when SCII comes out, I will play that) but I do a lot of Flash development and it’s pretty hard on the CPU… Anyways, I want to get an Intel Core2 Extreme QX6850 but I’m not sure on the board… I just want something solid. Any suggestions to help a guy out?

Thanks.

Thanks…

What exactly (pardon my ignorance) do the chip sets do/mean? What does a “north bridge Intel P35” do vs something like the Intel X38? Or nForce 780i SLI?

I’m also surprised to her Gigabyte… I don’t have a problem with them, I’m just used to “Asus” as the answer… It looks like a good board none the less.

Computers 101 here. Programs run by your computer are stored temporarily in your primary storage RAM (random access memory). The programs you are using stored in your RAM many times need to be accessed by your processor for calculations so the data flows through the northbridge chipset in your motherboard to the processor for calculations.

The video card in a system is also connected to your processor by the northbridge chipset.

The data in a hard drive, USB ports and any other items in your system are connected to the processor through the southbridge chipset. If your processor is accessing data from a hard drive the data flows from the hard drive through the southbridge, then northbridge to get to the central processing unit.

so in other words, what he is trying to say is the northbridge is very very crucial. and what im trying to say is DAMN dont waste your money on a QX6850. sure, its fast, but for the price there are better, cooler processors.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115034 there you go, its one dollar cheaper, has 4MB more cache, its 20NM smaller, (so its cooler) its the same speed, but it will overclock a lot farther.

Man alive! The Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650 is expensive! It has 12 megabytes of level 2 cache though. A very fast processor it is.

My current AMD Athlon 4000+ processor only has 1 megabyte of level 2 cache.

North & south bridge… Cool. But what’s the difference between a p35 chipset and a X38, or 780i… or any other chip set? IE what’s good and what’s not?

As for the CPU you recommended… I should point out I’m paying $239 (BNIB, direct from Intel)… I really appreciate the suggestion on that, however.
