so i was told my motherboard died on my dell and i need a new one. But I would like to get a decent name brand product, not from dell. I want something with a nice integrated sound card with optical out. I have a video card in my dell already, but I dont know what kind it is. All i know is it has vga, s-video, and DVI out. Any help??

I'm not sure if this still applies, but for a long time Dell systems used proprietary cases/PSU/motherboards. If you needed to replace one of the above, you had to go thru them directly because nothing else would fit. If you wanted to change any of the above, you'd have to replace ALL of the above.

I really hope they don't still do that, but I haven't kept up with their policies.

Edit:

GOOD NEWS: I ran across an article that says that Dell did away with that policy! http://www.maximumpc.com/article/dell_drop_kicks_proprietary_parts

BAD NEWS: If your system is more than a few months old, it probably still falls under the old proprietary parts policy.
