Mount a Laptop HDD to a Desktop.

Hello all,

I'm trying to put a laptop PATA HDD into a desktop, but I have two questions.

Do these drives not require power? There is no spot for a Molex connector.

and, Will I need an adapter, or will a standard full sized IDE cable suffice?

You'll need an adaptor like that. It's combined in one cable on a laptop to save space I believe.

the power goes through 2 of the 40 pin interface, so make sure you do not connect the hard drive upside down or you will fry the hard drive.

buy at the local computer store the adaptor that thermophilis said and also some hard drives (like mine) require extra software for working on a desktop computer....

Really? I've not heard of needing added software for an IDE drive. What kind of drive do you have? (And I hope they have the driver for linux).

No, no software needed. He might be talking about an external/auto backup drive
