mouse not working once windows xp installed

well i just reformatted my hard drive and installed windows xp and my mouse isnt working.

basically there are no drivers for a mouse and no drivers to install. when i go to device manager there is no category called "mice and other pointing devices" like there is in my moms windows xp.

anyone know how to fix this glitch? im currently re-reformatting and re-reinstalling windows and will get back if it fixes it
 
Just unlug the mouse, restart the computer.. wait for 5 min after the computer has started then plug it in. it should find the device. Maybe laggin because other things are starting up.
 
is your mouse plug and play? xp should be able to detect it.. if its not.. then you would need a driver.. however, it should be working either way.. if not, you'll have to navigate with the [tab] [wn key] [alt] keys and somehow install a driver..

try googling for your driver if the above suggestions doesn't work
