Mouse pointer problem

I’m having trouble with my mouse pointer and played with all the settings with no avail. Now I wonder if it’s the mouse itself that’s causing the problem. I just wanted to run it by here before I buy a new mouse.

I can move the pointer around normally, but clicking on it doesn’t always work the way I want it to. For an example when I highlight text in chrome and right click to google search, it just un-highlights. It will eventually work after multiple tries, but I have to highlight it each time.

Also sometimes it double clicks making multiple selections or drags something. It’s really aggravating went you try to pinpoint between some text and it drags half the sentence to another location.

I have an HP Pavilion HPE h8-1234 Desktop with the original HP mouse

I would replace the mouse, especially if it's more then a couple years old. The switches under the mouse are probably wearing out.
