Move Program Files...Is It Possible?

I did a little upgrading on the in-law's old desktop. It's an old Gateway running Windows XP. I installed a 60G SSD as the system drive and used the old HDD as general storage. anyway, there are some programs (specifically Roxio) that they want but don't have the disk or purchase code for any more. These programs are still on the old HDD. How do I get windows to recognize them and/or move them over to the system drive without paying for them again?

You'd have to find reinstall media for it, as you cannot straight copy a program folder to another drive.

Also I hope that you found a third party TRIM program since XP doesn't support TRIM.

When you install a program it not only copies files to the program files folder, but also creates registry keys, installs system files for licensing and so forth (depending on the program), and more.

Depending on which brand of ssd you got, its firmware may contain the functions of TRIM so you may be OK on XP.

LapLink sells software called PCMover that claims it can move installed programs from PC to another but also claims to be able to move them from a backup image. Check it out here: pcmover-feature-overview. I've never personally used it but have read reviews and talked to others that have used it. It works as advertised but takes hours to run. It would be much faster (and cheaper) to simply re-install but since they don't have the disk, this is the alternative.

What features do they use from Roxio? If they use Roxio to burn CDs then maybe you could install alternate software such as the free, ImgBurn.

Thanks. I'm not sure exactly what they do with Roxio or any of the others. Knowing them, probably just burn mix CDs for their car, but I may be mistaken.

It is very possible to do what you want.
Here is an example of what I did multiple times:

On my main computer 1 I have installed and adjusted everything (OS,drivers, programs, games and the rest...) exactly how I wanted. After that I made the entire clone copy of my entire main computer 1 on an external hard disk drive.Once I had that,I was finally able to APPLY THAT CLONE COPY on ANY other computers, laptops or netbooks I wanted to and it worked PERFECTLY!
But of course since the hardware was different every time, there was only ONE thing which needed to be installed of course: DRIVERS :D (But that is not a problem anyway since you can easily find them or if you already have them then that's even better)...

And here is what I used:

-Microsoft operating system disk of course...in my case that was my favorite Windows XP...

-Linux Ubuntu operating system disk...in my case that was Linux Ubuntu version 9.04...

-And of course a lot of time I spent many years ago until I found a way on how to clone any computer to any computer regardless of the hardware differences...:D

By the way...back then (a long time ago) I have taken pictures with my sellphone of EACH step on how to do all this.I might post them online next month...

Cheers!
