Move Sata HD to new desktop?

I have new Dell desktop with Windows 7 with a 500GB SATA HD. I have a 1.5 TB SATA drive in my old XP desktop I used as a back up for that desktop and my wife's Laptop. Can I just move the 1.5 TB drive from my old desktop to the new one and retain the data or do I have to reformat it or something.

As long as it was just used for data, you are fine. If it was used a primary OS drive then you would have to reinstall windows.
