i want some software that is free that i can use to make montages. right now im using just the regular windows movie maker and im looking for something a bit more professional looking

Sony Vegas.

High price tags, but are well worth it. Sony vegas is the prefered of those.

I agree with Vinnie. Adobe Premier or Sony Vegas. Personally, I use Adobe (it's around $100), but both are very good.
